I dunno why I'm getting all these old topics thrown up in my "replies to your posts" url, but seeing as this is the 8th one, I may as well contribute to the thread.

I grew up with Rap on one side (listening to Pac in car rides) and Rock on the other (listening to Queen and Bon Jovi soft s*** for the other car rides).

I remember having casettes, but it was Lion King soundtrack and those books on tape for kids (turn with the page on the beep).

I remember when I asked for a Walkman (upgrade from casettes!) I was bumping E-40 - In A Major Way to school. I also remember playing Creed - My Own Prison. Those would probably be the two for sure CDs that got rotation to go with my Rock/Rap analogy I've been using.

And then come Middle School where I was master of this new thing called LimeWire. And that is an interesting mix of Mac music I've ever had. I still have a couple songs from that "era" but a lot of them didn't make it throughout these years of computer transfers and getting a new ipod. Though for the few tracks I still have from those times, it's like time machine because I don't hear them any other way.

And by the time Middle School was over, I was well established in music (imo) where I was already getting what I wanted out of certain sections of the music world. Though until I was 16 or so, I wouldn't really broaden it out (also because my iPod was 4gigs and only had room for 1000 songs or so). That's when I was also breaching out by getting the larger iPod.

Started with mainstream rap but it wasn't serious, moved up to nu-metal, particularly SOAD, Slipknot, and Korn. Moved onto Nine Inch Nails. Moved onto Industrial. And since industrial is a crazy mess, it opened me up to pretty much everything else. I wouldn't necessarily say it was one thing, but rather collective things.
