What do you think about the 1919 Black Sox scandal?

I think the players involved were too harshly punished. The owner of the White Sox, Charles Comiskey, was a huge dickhead who cheated players out of money and acted like an asshole. And this was the 1910's, when players didn't have an ostentatious display of wealth that they do today. Back then, players played for upper-middle class salaries. So when Comiskey screwed the players out of incentive-based bonuses, you could see how the players would get pissed off. If MLB did something to protect the players, the chances of this happening would be a lot lower. I think a year-long bans would've been sufficient to get the message across

Also, why the fark did Shoeless Joe get banned? If he was trying to throw the series, then he obviously did a very terrible job of it. He hit .350 with the series' only homerun. Buck Weaver got banned for knowing about the incident, but not informing the authorities. Did MLB realize that if Weaver informed someone, that his life would've been on the line? This wasn't Winnie the Pooh throwing games, this was the farking Chicago mafia at the height of the Prohibition. I don't think the mafia would've taken kindly to being ratted out

I have no problem with the punishments but I haven't done a ton of research on this.

I love these topics where you just expect everyone to know what you're talking about.

Short: Eight players on the Chicago White Sox were banned for life from the league, because they were believed to be intentionally losing games, for gambling reasons obviously.

That being said, I really don't know and want to read the whole story behind it.

I am =P

Tova does what you're saying but i dont think this was one of those times. This is one of the biggest scandals in sports history and a majority of sports fans that care about the history of it would know about.

Yeah to go along with TT, this is one of the bigger sports events. The Black Sox incident is just about iconic as the 1980 Miracle on Ice, or Muhammad Alo knocking out George Foreman, or Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game
